New Annual Field Trip Event

Atlantic CLRA are happy to announce that this summer we will be implementing the first of a new annual field trip event.  Each year we will choose an interesting Project which has been completed (or is in the process of being completed), and offer to members and/or past CLRA attendees the opportunity to attend a tour of the site.

We see this as a valuable method to share successful reclamation/remediation/restoration projects, and provide valuable learning opportunities and industry networking potential.

This summer’s  tour is being organized by Andy Sharpe of East Coast Aquatics and will be taking place on the floodplain of the Sackville River in Bedford, NS on August 13, 2015.

The event is free to attend and will be followed by a CLRA board meeting and social gathering at the Fireside Pub in Halifax.

Please see details below regarding the Project and event details.

If you are planning on attending, please RSVP to myself (Andy Walter) by August 7th.

The Project

The floodplain of the Sackville River was mined for construction aggregate for decades, resulting in extensive alterations to the river channel and the riparian wetlands. For the past three years, East Coast Aquatics (ECA), the Sackville River Association, Thalmus Consultants and NSTIR have worked to restore wetland functions and fish habitat. Through a number of physical alterations, ECA has worked to retain water on the landscape for longer, and build organic wetland soils. In-stream works have sought to stabilize the channel alignment and maximize fish habitat.
